History and pewter. At Sweden’s entry into the Thirty Years’ War, the mayor of Calmar, Nils Krååk, gathered the King’s Småland foresters and set up a small unit for shipment to Germany. Few in number and mounted, they were used during sieges and for reconnaissance where their fine-caliber rifled hunting studzen with superior precision came into use. It is difficult to know what they really looked like, but they were given blue cloth and had to sew their own garments. The hunting weapons were made a little shorter and more manageable than the military muskets, hence the German name “stutzen”.

Commander Jakob Henriksson Hästesko and the Swedish field sign. King Erik XIV was energetic and capable, he tried to create a nationally trained army and make Sweden self-sufficing on soldiers to drop mercenaries but suffered from increasing mental illness.
Swedish peasant soldiers with “glavar”. Chose these as there was a constant shortage of pike and arquebus “röhr”. The Swedish infantry did not shoot very much. The crossbow began to become obsolete and there was a lack of röhr, or are the archaeologists simply wrong?

In time, after the war against Poland, the Swedish cavalry switched to shock tactics, later used with success in the Thirty Years’ War.

Leipzig 1813 at the Swedish Army Museum

There is currently a wargame exhibition called “Krigsspel” at the Swedish Army Museum. Last weekend me and three friends joined a 15 mm napoleonic battle arranged by OSS, Organisation for Strategy games Stockholm, at the museum. OSS supplied a large gameboard, lots of fine 15mm miniatures and rules. Visitors had a chance to join in and at times there were around 20 people playing. The setting was great and there is a special feel to play in an old hall under the vaults with real artillery pieces and other Napoleonic equipment around.

The game board depicted a section on the north side of Leipzig 1813 with 5 victory objectives. In the center was a village called Möckern. Me and my friends were given forces and I ended up with a veteran infantry brigade with strong artillery and excellent leadership at the extreme left. Next in line was my nephew Björn who had great luck and got a crack heavy cavalry force including cuirassiers. Even general Ney himself was in the vicinity to lend a hand if we experienced command problems. In front of us and between the lines was an important victory objective in a church and a walled village. There was som some small fields at the end of the game board but our approaches looked really cramped and we had no room for maneuvering. If we adopted attack formation or fire lines two thirds of our force would have to be in reserve. We surveyed the situation and came up with a rudimentary plan. We were to play a small part in a really large tabletop battle.

When the first turn began the cavalry swung left and headed for open ground and the infantry ended up in cover next to the wall surrounding the village. The forces thus switched place and as we wanted cavalry securing the flank and infantry in the cramped alleys and gardens in the village. Our command rolls was excellent, and continued to be, and everything went as planned.

Meanwhile the rest of the French line came into motion. Since many were newcomers to the game, yes even tabletop gaming, and there were large numbers of small miniatures to move around the turns progressed at a snails pace. We however enjoyed the game. It looked awesome and talking to fellow French players making up plans was really cool. We had two overall commanders used to the game and they drew up the strategy and gave orders. Our orders were simple. Try to secure the church and anchor left flank. In the pic above, the French forces on our right advance with German allies in support. When we went over to this part of the game board me and my nephew saw that the forces here were weak ordinary line and the small miniature generals of much bader quality rules wise, meaning it was harder to get things to work. German allies were around and their activation probability was a disappointment but they had some fine skirmishing forces (jaegers ?) in forward positions.

Near me and my nephews forces but on the other side of the church, hussars and dragoons went forward and concentrated infantry used the roads. These forces had luck and great die rolling left them in command of the church victory objective in the first turns. There was some heroic stuff with French hussars charging and delaying enemy moves towards church.

Soon my force was bottlenecked in the small approaches around the church and the enemy forces proved to be really strong so we played it out safe and went for a defensive stance. We did not have to attack since we controlled the church. Meanwhile the battle raged on other part of the battlefield. On our flank there was a lull for much of the day and we traded artillery fire and made minor adjustment. One can say that we checked the strong enemy force. There was a mutual cavalry charge around noon and we forced enemy infantry into square pinning them but got the worst of it and our dragoons came back depleted and shaken. We kept the elite cuirassiers as a reserve. Then the enemy slowly approached us and we were, to be honest, outplayed by more experienced tabletop enemies using infantry, cavalry and artillery in deadly combinations but it was to late for ’em. We still had two thirds of our force left when the game ended in the evening. We lost a horse battery, dragoons and our forward infantry regiment but had fresh troops that never saw combat. At that time a big hole had been punched in the French centre by Prussians (?) and 5 brigades were destroyed. Far from us on the right flank things looked better and the enemy Swedes committed there were on the run. Flanks holding and center defeated. When counting victory objectives the French won! Had play continued into the night I think that we would have lost as the enemy forces had numerical advantage and more reserves. For our own part we had a chance to try this great game and our cautious play may have been the right way?

The sad and horrifying story of the Schwedenbürg constabularies final ordeal as notated by the venerable scribe Hieronymus

This miniature game report is set in a time of chaos and civil war in the imaginary renaissance Empire after a comet struck the city of Mordheim destroying it and scattering a gem called wyrdstone throughout the ruins. Wyrdstone was a potent mineral that could be used in vile alchemical experiments but also a terrible drug capable of creating hideous mutations. The small town of Schwedenbürg was situated not far from the city of the damned, Mordheim. The mayor Stephan and his advisory wizard Jerzy had debated the inflow of wyrdstone for years. Jerzy meant that although there seemed like wyrdstone was around one could not present the facts as it was uncertain how the townspeople would react? Stephan however needed to win another election and felt that he had to address this threat to security. In the end they however decided upon sending in the towns police force, the constabulary, on a secret mission to neutralise the wyrdstone dealer whoever it could be.

Elyas Danßon was the leader of the constabulary and best friend of the mayor Stephan. An intelligent and brave man of great stamina he was also soft hearted and well known for the custom to offer coffee and cinnamon buns to criminals and monsters alike trying to get on a good foot for negotiations. When ordered to enter Mordheim Elyas decide to take his two trusted lieutenants along, Evert Stroemback and Lars Gunvaldßon. He needed experienced back-up so an obvious choice was the one legged veteran madman “WG”. To fill the patrol out he opted for two young recruits, Kling and Klang. In case the coffee did not work they all dressed up in their best armour, bringing sharp fencing swords and an ample supply of the constabularies favorite weapon, wheellock pistols. “WG” brought his old two-handed flail who had been a reliable companion on many a campaign. Let the terrible ordeal begin.

Upon entering the old ruined no go zone Elyas decided on splitting the party sending Evert and the youngster Kling to examine the building while the rest followed the rubbled street forward. The main group of four did not get far when they where ambushed by a band of dark clad thugs with sharp knives hidden in their mantles. This time however the thugs were met by a well armed adversary of considerable strength and when Elyas addressed them with an offer a starving thug have hard to turn down it all ended in a friendly meeting. The thugs explained that a powerful evil sorcerer traded in wyrdstone but that the journey there would be extremely dangerous.

The thugs encountered were neutralized in a friendly way. Elyas tactic bearing fruit.

Meanwhile Kling and Evert searched the eerie ruins. Soon the chit chat of their companions could not be heard any more and they noticed a small blue lizard running across the floor in front of them. They decided to follow the strange creature. Wandering off to far they soon lost their way and stumbled into deserted streets and abandoned buildings.

The lizard was seen scittering around at times and the two constables tried to catch up. Rounding a corner they were met by a horde of blue lizards. Most much bigger than the one they had followed. A large one set his yellow eyes on them and hissed “Weee fish for foood”. The two were never seen again by any Schwedenbürger.

After saying good bye to the thugs the four remaining constables searched the ruins for their friends put then decided to press on. A rather bad decision as soon strange screams echoed through the streets. Strange creatures were glimpsed in dark doorways and windows, teeth and claws of strange bubonic mutants. The monstrous group got larger and larger so Elyas decided to offer some cinnamon buns but this time to no avail, suddenly the mutants attacked. The constables fired their pistols at short range and a terrifying melee ensued. The enemies payed a high price but their numbers soon begun to tell. In a last effort one legged “WG”swinged his flail around franticly but to no avail as he was disarmed and carried off into the darkness together with Lars Gunvaldßon, leaving the shocked Elyas and young Klang in the street.

Elyas finally decided to turn around and try to escape. The commander and his young adept started to move through the ruins avoiding the streets. Now they were the hunted and after a while they could hear movement behind them. Elyas encumbered and slow started to realise that their chances started to look bleak.

Klang stopped and suggested that he ought to try to lure the monsters away, the heroic maneuver could give Elyas a slim chance to escape. His last companion sprinting off waving his arms and screaming to get the attention of whatever moved in the shadows, Elyas started off in another direction. Rounding a corner he faced off directly with the wyrd stone dealing sorcerer himself. Swearing, closing his visor and drawing his sword he charged his adversary and an epic fight begun. Detonations, beatings, moans and screams echoed in the streets and they say that on a still day you can still hear them…

Elyas never returned from the ruins, neither did any of the constables.



Heraldry up north


Swedish 13th century knights ride out a misty winter morning. From this time a few heraldic designs are known but there is also great uncertainty regarding colours and use. Another problem is naming of the knights. They often have a name, the son being named after the father by adding -sson to the father’s surname. Thus the grandfathers name can be Sverker Eriksson, the father Erik Sverkersson and then Sverker Eriksson [the younger] again. They are also often named after heraldic symbols and homes to try to sort lineages out. Some of them have nicknames. A big problem for historians of this period in Swedish history is that the national archives were lost in fires.


To the left is Sigtrygg Bengtsson Boberg from a family of lawmen of Boberga farmstead on the north side of lake Mälaren. A fleur-de-lis with antlers, actual coloration is unknown. The family had considerable possessions in Västmanland and the sparsely populated Värmland. Their coat of arms have been found during archaeological surveys at Ölme, a small fief. They disappear from history around 1350.

Next is Björn Näf Färla from Västergötland, the friend of King Birger Jarl and teacher to his son Magnus Ladulås. The historians think that the “färla” was used to punish students and children and the Näf family had two of them crossed on their coat of arms. Colours are unknown. The Näf family soon died out.

The Finsta family used two folded white wings on a field of red. Here is Peter Israelsson Finsta. Not much is known about him but he traveled to Outremer and came back. The Finsta family seems very religious including bishops and one saint, Heliga Birgitta. They had large holding in Uppland north of the capital.

Elof the Bastard was the half brother of king Birger and not much is known about him except his strong loyalty to the Crown, he have been mentioned in letters as a staunch defender of the King. He possibly used a golden red winged arrow over a field of blue, at least his descendants did.

During Erik’s time the borders were extended to the east, a new tax system strengthening the Crown was introduced and the Swedish church was reformed. Most historians today agree that his reign was successful even though he had to cope with two rebellions, one forcing him to flee to Denmark for a while.

The Finnish Bishop was forced to resign in 1245 after admitting several felonies, such as torturing a man to death, and forging a papal letter.

The early history of Hammersta family is largely unknown but Ingevald was Bailiff in the capital Stockholm. Hammersta was a fief later built on the coastline in Södermanland.

Folke Algotsson (black griffin head on yellow)
Folke was a knight and judge. In 1288 he robbed away his love Ingrid Svantepolksdotter and fled to Norway. He was declared an outlaw and the King confiscated all his properties. His brother Karl Algotsson, who was accused of being the one who planned the abduction, was arrested and executed in 1289. The family’s keep was besieged and destroyed.

Upon the death of King Erik he became Jarl of Sweden in 1250 securing the throne for his son Magnus. Birger also led the Second Swedish Crusade to Finland, which established Swedish rule. Additionally, he is traditionally attributed to have founded the Swedish capital around 1250. His tomb was opened in 2002 and DNA taken.

15th century. Erik Nilsson Puke of Rossvik revolted against the King in 1437. He is here seen with his ally Bailiff Hans Mårtensson holding the banner of Rossvik featuring a white boat and yellow star on field of blue. Erik Puke with an army of peasants and miners managed to beat the King in the engagement at Hällaskogen. The King’s German and Danish mercenaries mounted a frontal assault in the wooded terrain but was beaten back by the polearm and crossbow armed peasants. The Swedish peasant armies were quite successful. Although badly beaten at Wisby in 1361 they proved able to win battles during the 15th century. The success made them prone to fight again and they became a power to be reckoned with. Some historians find this to be the explanation of power sharing in late medieval Swedish politics and absence of serfdom. Erik Puke and Hans Mårtensson was however betrayed and executed.

And now to something entirely different – the zombie apocalypse in northern latitudes. We use 28mm miniatures to represent survivors organized in small groups. One or two players taking care of one group. A typical session they enter the eerie zone of zombie infested buildings and hunt for clothing, food, water, medicals, ammunition and vehicles. There are also other strange monstrosities around and pockets of radiation, gas and corrosive liquid. Hell is an appropriate word for it.

The groups can cooperate and barter but they sometimes turn on each other over scarce assets. Individuals have their own equipment, traits, skills and knowledge. One secretive and homicidal group seem to target all other groups. Lets present them first.


hazmatRumors says that this heavily armed and well equipped group belong to the government. They constantly try to ambush other humans. Their greatest assets are automatic weapons with silencers, plenty of ammunition, body armor, breathing masks and radio communication. The silencers make them dangerous, they can  fire their weapons without necessarily drawing attention from zombies. They seem to have military or special forces training. They however move slowly burdened by their cumbersome equipment and other bands try to gang up on them. Arktikugol are especially hateful since they are the survivors of a massacre conducted by HAZMAT at the start of the apocalypse.

arktikugolThese men are the surviving workers of the Russian coal mining company Arktikugol in Barentsburg. When the apocalypse started and they were attacked by HAZMAT they managed to break into a secret military storehouse and gather modern weapons, including two machineguns, and some ammo. They also have their breathing masks from work that come in handy when they enter the zone. They are no-nonsense, brave, hardy and determined, occasionally they have come to terms with the other teams even though they are suspicious. They however seem to have a friendly relationship with Team Norge, probably they were acquainted before the catastrophe.

norwayTeam  Norge consists of three townsfolk from Longyearbyen strengthened by two soldiers, the only survivors of Telemark Battalion. Usually they move swiftly into the ruins backed by the soldiers sniper team that provide support from a high position some distance away. They are familiar with the harsh conditions of the arctic. A couple of weeks ago they were ambushed by a group of vicious teenagers.

Schools out for winter


anarchyWhen the apocalypse swept over Svalbard a group of teenagers in a behavior modification and anger management program was stranded on the freezing island together with their therapist. A couple of weeks ago they where joined by a strange well armed man coming down from the sky in a small glider. He doesn’t say much except his name, Snake Pilsner, or something like it. For the time being he helps the teenagers, maybe he see a younger version of himself in them.

The hunters


polar-bearThe hunters are well accustomed to the surroundings. They are well clothed and fed but often raid the zone for equipment, ammunition and medicals. Other groups approach them to barter for polar bear meat. So far the encounters have been friendly but supplies are running low so the future looks pretty grim and desperation grow in many survivor groups. The hunters assets also include hunting rifles, snow shoes and two useful dogs, Gere and Freke.

Battle outside Ebelsberg 3 May 1809

A couple of weeks ago we decided on a multiplayer miniature Napoleonic game in 15mm scale. There is great fun in two teams trying to beat each other with individual players taking care of parts of the historical armies, in this case brigade generals and the units under their command. Discussions, planning and orders in a social context with some beer and snacks. The game was umpired and the players knew very little of what was to unfold. There was also a twist as the victory conditions could be changed by the Austrian players after a few turns.

The historical setting was the beginning of the battle of Ebelsberg on the 3rd of May 1809 between the French with some Bavarian allies and Austrian armies. Following Archdukes Charles declaration of war and disastrous invasion of Bavaria, Napoleon followed up by crossing the border to Austria. General Hiller was retreating with parts of the Kaiserlich-königliche Armee south of the Danube towards Vienna with the French in hot pursuit. The army stopped to rest at the town of Ebelsberg and a rear guard was set up under Vincent to await Schustekh’s brigade that have been delayed. The original victory condition was simple. If the Austrian players can get Schustekh off the board intact they would win. But I decided on an unhistorical option. The Austrian players can opt for a full scale battle transforming a brief holding action into an attempt to give the French a bloody nose outside town. Hiller certainly had this option but instead the army was passively sliced to pieces by the aggressive general Massena until the Austrian high command woke up, the French rampaging through town. Massena on the other hand need to catch Schustekh or simply maul their opponents if they decide to make a serious stand. The armies are about equal in strength if the Austrians commit the whole army although the French have an edge in cavalry and artillery. On the other hand the there are some terrain that can be used defensively. In quality the French are better off but the battle is interesting since there are some really solid Austrian units around, for example a reserve of grenadier battalions. When it comes to leadership the French force however outshine their opponents but then again the commander Hiller is probably the best there is to find among corps commanders or should we say the least bad and a legend, Radetsky, is on hand to lead one brigade. It is however likely that the Austrian commanders will act overcautious and drag their feet. We did not have all the historical units but did our best with what we had.



The battlefield and game board consisted of the fields in front of Ebelsberg with two roads to Linz and Walls. Ebelsberg is across a bridge over river Traun just outside the board to the left in the photo above. It is crucial for the Austrian players to hold the road fork as it serves as bridgehead for the rearguard actions and it is the point where they can retreat off the board if they decide to run. There is a small village, Klein München, with a walled church along the left edge lining the Walls road. The other shorter road to Linz pass through Abdecker’s wood and leads to the right side of the board exiting next to a prominent hill.

The Austrian rear guard at Ebelsberg consisted of two brigades under Josef Radetsky and Josef Hoffmeister respectively under the overall command of old Karl Vincent. Radetsky’s force is a light and fast moving avant-garde brigade and Hoffmeister’s a standard infantry brigade. Some of the units and one of the generals are of fine quality. Lets check out the details.


Hoffmeister’s brigade is setup in a rather strong defensive position inside the Abdecker’s wood on both sides of the roads to Linz. Two of the better “Hungarian” infantry regiments of the time originating from Transylvania was infantry regiment 31 Benjovszky and 51 Splenyi. Both of some renown, Benjovszky draw German recruits from the eerie mountain towns and Splenyi a mix of hardy Rumanians and Szeklers from the countryside. They had prepared a hasty defence by cutting down some trees to give them a rudimentary breastwork. Right on the road is a battery of heavy 12 pdr guns. In reserve to the rear is a light cavalry regiment, the Rosenberg chevau-léger. Unfortunately Hoffmeister is an uninspiring and passive leader not unlike most of the Austrian commanders of the time. He lacks positive combat modifiers if he leads from the front and is likely to fail some command rolls when he try to move his brigade. Hoffmeister is however this day destined for some epic achievements but more on that later. To the rear at the road fork between the brigades is general Vincent who can race forward to help one of the two brigades under his command.


On the Austrian left flank Radetsky was covering the road to Walls. His infantry, Gradiskaner grenz, is defending the church and can be very hard to root out. The Croatians of the grenz infantry used to guard the mountain ridges on the border to the Ottoman empire. They were fierce fighters and experts in skirmishing and ambush, this unit can move in a flexible “open” formation and harass the enemy. They excel in this kind of warfare but if pressed into operating like ordinary line infantry they will likely be disappointing. In game terms they perform bad when forming line, assault column, mass and square. But in defending the church their tenacity and fighting spirit can be a real asset. The lance armed Erzherzog (EH) Karl uhlans was in a forward position overlooking the road and a light horse artillery provided some additional firepower. Radetsky himself is an excellent leader that will become a legend in the future and inspire the music in “Radetsky march” by Johann Strauss sr, if he survives this debacle so to speak.

No sign of Schustekh but at 10 o’clock a large body of French light cavalry burst onto the board. Verdammt! This is the vanguard of Massena’s corps under the command of the dynamic Jacob Marulaz. 3rd and 4th chasseurs à cheval, 8th hussars and an allied Bavarian regiment, the 1st dragoons, backed by a light Bavarian horse battery. All four are fine cavalry regiments but the red jacketed 8th hussars must be held in a tight reign since they are very aggressive and likely to charge even in disadvantageous situations. The Bavarian regiment have drawn veteran recruits from a disbanded heavy cavalry regiment and include many a veteran so they are on par with the French. Marulaz surveys the situation and decides to stay out of musketry range. The Austrian battery barks and the first horsemen in 3rd chasseurs fall to terrifying bouncing round shots but nobody decide to gallop off. They have seen the horrors of Napoleonic combat before. The battle have started.

Marulaz thinks for a moment. A direct assault with light cavalry into the woods is out of the question and a dismounted advance in front of all that firepower is equally bad. Light cavalry is armed with carbines but against the volleys of infantry in line they stand small chance. Splitting the command is an option but command will be severed and individual regiments will likely drag their heels or in case of the fire-eating 8th hussars charge headless into the enemies. Marulaz decides to move his entire force around the woods and shift left to threaten the road fork and grab opportunities as they come along. The Bavarian horse battery that have just deployed must mount their cannons without firing a shot. Vincent watches the French move and speed forward to take direct command of Rosenberg chevau-léger to insure that they do as intended. The Austrian cavalry move up to the flank of the Austrian infantry but they are outnumbered 4 to 1. To march the infantry out of the rather strong position is tempting but they are needed to shield the road to Ebelsberg. Radetsky on the other flank decides to help and sends EH Karl uhlans towards the distant woods to help but the excellent general fails his command roll and the uhlans move with a snails pace.

11:00 Damn, where is Schustekh?


Soon things turn from bad to worse for the Austrians. Instead of Schustekh lost force a French infantry brigade enters the map along the Linz road, General Louis Jacques Coëhorn leading the veterans of Tirailleurs Corses [Corsicans], 17th Léger, 21st Léger and a heavy battery. From the direction of Walls there are dust banks as Nansouty’s cavalry brigade gallops onto the gameboard. Elite armored heavy shock cavalry – 1st carabiniers and 2nd cuirassiers. Just about when the Austrians give up hope the lost brigade of Schustekh’s is sighted. Coming in from an unexpected direction between the French forces. He has two german infantry regiments, 14 Kleber and 59 Jordis, in addition to one of the finest light cavalry of the Austrian army ; Stipsicz hussars in their light green shakos. Now the umpire steps in. The Austrian players can try to get Schustekh’s infantry across the board intact for a win and that is was happened in history but they can also choose to call on General Hiller and reserves for a chance to beat the French in a pitched battle. They know additional French forces are at hand but not how big they are and where they will enter. The Austrian players think for quite some time. They are clearly worried as it seems like the units are to few to insure Schustekh’s withdrawal. On the right they need to hold of the fast moving force of Marulaz and on the left they need to delay Nansouty’s heavy cavalry but they only have three light cavalry regiments as the church and woods, that are good defensive positions, are to be held by the infantry to steady the line. The Austrians finally decides to offer a pitched battle. There will be blood.

11:30 Hiller is cheated on the historical goose liver.


At the Schloß Ebelsberg general Hiller is just about to sink his teeth into the goose liver and enjoy some excellent wine brought up from the cellar when in a very unusual way he decides to check out that rumbling cannon fire that have been going on for an hour. Upon seeing a French force converging on the road fork he in an even more unusual way acts with great speed and decides that there have been enough retreats and that the time has come to show the frogs what Austrian steel is worth. Summoning his staff he orders his best infantry in the form of grenadiers under Constantin s’Aspre and the untrained militia from Vienna under Josef Reinwald Waldegg to support the forward positions. “This is where we make a stand!” Meantime two more French infantry brigades is sighted, Florentin Ficatier and Joseph Lesuire bring on six more french infantry regiments supplemented with two additional heavy artillery batteries. Finally the effective French overall commander André Massena enters and decides on a very aggressive stance. As a man who have risen through the ranks by his his own merits he frowns at the lethargic old nobles on the other side of the line. Massena is certainly capable to move the army into favorable positions. The order of battle is fixed and shown below.



All in all 9 infantry, 6 cavalry and 4 batteries. Massena, Marulaz, Nansouty and Coëhorn are excellent leaders with positive modifiers in tactical combat but all are dynamic and able to march their troops fast and steady them in combat.



All in all 10 infantry, 4 cavalry and 2 batteries. Radetsky is an excellent leader. Hiller and Schustekh are OK and the rest are, if one are to be honest, a rather sorry bunch.


On the Austrian left Nansouty’s French heavy cavalry turns left away from the church and go towards Schustekh at full speed, the idea is to attack the Austrians and thus make it impossible for them to march and join the Austrian main force building up at the road fork. A risky move even though they are first class troops. The newly arrived infantry from Ficatier’s brigade are left behind and cannot support them. The light Austrian horse battery at the church send a few misdirected shots in the direction of the cavalry.


Coëhorn advance in assault columns for a frontal attack on Hoffmeister’s Transylvanian regiments in Abdecker’s wood. They are met by musketry salvoes and the heavy battery exchange their round shots for canister. The fire is a disappointment for the Austrians but all three regiments in Coëhorns brigades are reduced. Tirailleurs Corses taking the worst in their central position flanked by the two léger. The French form a battery consisting of the heavy foot battery and Marulaz Bavarian horse artillery. Austrian losses are small but they start to brace for a french assault next turn.


Vincent is in direct command of Rosenberg chevau léger and he backs off slightly to insure that they do not get charged by the numerically superior French. In front of them are the 3rd and 4th Chasseurs á cheval. At the road fork the Austrian reinforcements start to enter. Hiller decides to march d’Aspres’s elite grenadiers towards Marulaz to check the advance of the light cavalry with the Vienna volunteers safely following the road behind them. There are however problems and the Austrian generals seem confused (failed command rolls). Putting the the strongest element of the army, the grenadiers, to cover the road also proves to be a grave error that the Austrian players will regret.

12:00 Massena: En avant!


Coëhorns units are ordered forward. The 21 Léger and Tirailluers Corses change formation to line to maximise firepower and Massena himself take a risk and lead the 17th Léger forward in assault column to engage in melee. The Austrian fire is however shattering and the 17th wavers and stops unable to advance against the wall of smoke and fire. They even lose stragglers that start to run in the direction opposite to the commanders intention. Not even Massena himself can stop them. It seems Abdecker’s wood will be a challenge to carry from these sons of Vlad.


Marulaz is stopped by the grenadiers, he orders his three leftmost regiments out of musketry range but the 8th hussars lingers and are caught by a salvo losing 1/4 of their strength in minutes. Better maneuver and be happy with attention from the best part of the Austrian army as they now cannot be used in other parts of the battlefield. The 3rd Chasseurs however engage in a swirling melee with Vincent and the Rosenberg chevau-léger, hard to tell which will get the upper hand.


On the Austrian right things look dire. Schustekh must be extricated but the French elite heavy cavalry bear down on them. Radetsky takes a grim decision and lead the uhlans in a desperate head on charge at the carabiniers. Radetsky is a splendid leader but the result is catastrophic and the armor clad horsemen cut like a warm knife through butter. The shattered rest of the lancers retreat, Radetsky swearing over his hopeless situation.

12:30 Radetsky and Vincent killed in action.


Action heats up all along the front with no less than four cavalry charges and intense combat between Hoffmeister and Coëhorn around Abdecker’s wood now dubbed hornet’s nest by the french infantrymen. 2nd Cuirassiers attack Klebek IR 14. The Austrians take a risk and remain in line formation, a safer option would be forming square. They receive the charge with vigour leaving lots of dead horsemen in front them and the cuirassiers that was hoping for an overrun have to retreat. When trying to get away they are hit by another salvo and the dice decide that their loss is gruesome the armor plating not saving them from the lead storm. The 1st Carabiniers under direct command of Nansouty charge the rests of EH Karl uhlans. The uhlans are shattered and Radetsky is cut down! Jordis IR 59 take revenge and fire a devastating salvo at the victorious carabiniers. Schustekh really bites back and Nansoutys brigade is in shambles. Lesuire with three infantry regiments, 28th Léger, 27th Ligne and 29th Ligne, who was behind Coëhorn have however been ordered right over the prominent hill to squeeze Schustekh’s command. Another desperate Austrian cavalry charge is ordered and Stipscz hussars hit the 28 Léger but are unable to shift them and take the greater loss. It seems hard to attack fresh infantry with cavalry. The combat between Rosenberg chevau léger and 3rd Chasseurs is finally decided. The austrian regiment is destroyed and Vincent killed, the second general to fall in a matter of minutes. The 3rd Chassurs have however suffered terrifying losses and will play no further part in the battle. It is clear that the Austrians light cavalry is used to halt the french moves but their gallantry come at a price and the Austrians are running out on fast flexible assets. Likewise the French heavy cavalry is spent but their goal to stop Schustekh’s move towards the other Austrians is achieved.

Massena again tries to take Abdecker’s wood but the french are halted. The combat reverts to a terrifying attritional fire duel between Hoffmeister and Coëhorn. The Austrians around the road fork try to advance, their goal to drive Marulaz away and help Hoffmeister but they move slowly. Generals Waldegg and d’Aspre are unsure of the situation, sense danger and demand support on their flanks (i.e. the fail their command rolls again). Hiller is in rage and send sharp notes containing the words “imbecill”, “coward”, “court martial” and “fire squad”.

When Ficatiers brigade, 40th, 88th and 103rd Ligne, marches of against Schustekh and it is clear that the church in Klein München is not a primary goal the Gradiskaner grenz smartly march out and take up position along the road forming a skirmish line. The Croatians start to harass the 103rd with long range rifle shots that will lead to great loss in the coming hours. The densely packed French infantrymen will have to endure.

13:00 Hiller’s quagmire


While Schustekh and Hoffmeister are hard pressed in their forward positions Hiller try to press things at the road fork with his two unwilling subcommanders. The grave mistake to let the grenadiers face Marulaz light cavalry begins to tell. A better option would have been to let the Vienna volunteers protect the build up area in a defensive formation. They could have anchored the Austrian right in squares supported by their weak cavalry contingent. Now the grenadiers slowly advance and Marulaz backs off, Austrian resource wasted.


Waldegg meanwhile try to get forward but every move is checked. The 1st Vienna volunteers advance but due to their poor morale they have to adopt a defensive mass formation when threatened by the 4th Chasseurs a cheval. In a desperate moment the Vienna volunteers cavalry are ordered to chase the cavalry off and clear the road but the untrained horsemen are duly routed, shocked by the grim realities of war. Marulaz is clearly playing his cards well keeping big parts of the enemy occupied with small losses. He can attack when he wants to and move around freely now when there is no enemy cavalry around.

13:30 Schustekh and Hoffmeister give up


After bravely beating off the elite cuirassiers and carabiniers Schustekh in vain try to escape but is surrounded and forced to form up for a last desperate defence. He can at least bind up a good part of the french infantry for another half our. His brigade is then shattered and the general taken prisoner. The only surviving cavalry in the Austrian force, Stipsicz hussars, watch their fate and then withdraws to a position near the church.


In Abdecker’s wood Hoffmeister have held off the enemy for four hours and inflicted crippling losses on two French regiments, the veteran Tirailluers Corses and 17th Léger. Wisely he decides to save the artillery while there is still some time. The fresh 39th Ligne from Lesuire’s brigade and the only usable regiment in Coëhorns burdened brigade, 21 Léger, finally clear the woods. Hoffmeister might be up for promotion. His abilities clearly better than expected.

14:00 Defensive stance


With the forward positions broken Hiller takes some time to put whats left in a wide arc with grenadiers and volunteers intersected by the retreated batteries. There is even possible to have a small grenadier reserve ready to step forward. The Gradiskaner grenz go back to the church and anchor the left. Meanwhile the French move forward but it will take them another hour to get into contact with this last defense line.

14:30 Formation of a great battery


In preparation for the final assault Massena looks over his remaining units. 6 regiments seem fit to continue the fight. He decides to use Ficatier’s two fairly fresh regiments, the 40th and 88th Ligne, to root the Croatians out from the church and the other four to break Hiller. Lesuire’s 3 regiments, the 28th Léger, 27th Ligne and 39th Line and Coëhorns only remaining regiment, the battered 21st Légere. The key to victory, however, is concentrated artillery. Soon they begin a terrifying bombardment aiming mainly at the shaky volunteers. The Austrians try to reply but they are not only outnumbered, ammunition levels are dangerously low.

15:00 Not beaten yet


Ficatier moves up to the church, Frenchmen falling every meter to accurate rifle fire from the rather formidable bastion. The 40th Ligne goes into line to maximize firepower while the 88th Ligne try to assault the Croatians behind the church wall. The French start to waver and at this point the gallant Stipsicz hussars deliver an unexpected shattering flank charge. The French general wrongly counted on the cavalry being outside charge range. 88th Ligne rout throwing muskets and shakos to the ground. Ficatier find it impossible to renew the offensive, his regiments to tired and reduced. Hiller watch in his spyglass and in a prosaic voice remarks: “A small success is better than no success at all”. Left flank safe.

15:30 – 16:30 Final assault


It is time for the final assault and the french move in towards the center avoiding the strong Brzezinsky and Sharlach grenadiers. The combat is short and when the bombarded Volunteers are soundly beaten and both batteries overrun the Austrians launch their last reserve, Kirchenbetter’s grenadiers, at the French spearhead. The outnumbered grenadiers fail to break the French and the Austrians retreat the Volunteers dissolving. Hiller withdraws his last units, Brzezinsky and Sharlach grenadiers off the map as further resistance is futile. French victory!

Massena sighs when he look out over the corpse ridden fields and decides to send an aide-de-camp to parley with the defiant Croats in the church. Enough blood in one day. Maybe he can talk them out of it?


It seems like the Austrians will have a really tough time trying to beat the French outside Ebelsberg. One can better have the players change sides for a rerun and see if occurrences differ. The Austrians where defeated piecemeal by a more mobile enemy that used superior numbers in cavalry to fix the Austrians in unfavorable positions. The Austrian light cavalry did their best in gallant but futile charges, mid game they were spent. French casualties was however heavy and the Austrians proved that they can stand up to the French regiment for regiment if one excludes the shaky volunteer regiments that proved to be a liability. Hoffmeister’s heroic defense of the woods was capable and he saved the artillery for further use. Schustekh’s handling of the “tall boys” in the heavy cavalry regiments and the Gradiskaner grenz also shines this dark day from an Austrian point of view. The key to victory for the French was Marulaz who proved to be a real pain with his fast moving force able to pick the favorable combats he wanted to. Maybe it is also better to have cavalry concentrated in brigades the French way than in a supporting role spread across the infantry brigades? The effect of concentrated artillery fire ensured a successful final assault for Massena. For the battle to be more interesting you probably have to add a few units to the Austrian army since their leaders seem to make them a bit worse than they are.

Sedgwick’s Windmill

Muskets & Tomahawks is a fast paced and fun game about the French-indian war and American war of independence. We use 28 mm miniatures from Redoubt, Perry brothers and Conquest to depict the fighters. In this game activation is card-based. That means you draw a random card and activate your troops. The miniatures can then choose to move, reload or fire. Different types of troops have their own cards added to the stack. This makes the turn unpredictable.

A couple of weeks ago we had our first game. Me and my daughter Nelly versus my friends Kalevi and Magnus. We took the English team, Kalevi commanded the Indians and Magnus the French. When you play for the first time it takes a while as you are unfamiliar with the rules. We also missed out on some important rulings but had a really great time.


In upper Maine, John Sedgwick, a frontier veteran have settled down. He built a sturdy residence and a large windmill. Soon he was in the middle of a sprawling community as more and more farmers moved in. Then the war came and most able was sent to fight the French and Indians. So far this part of the country have been spared from raids. However the Abenaki Indian chief Unguskan have decided that a proper way to show his prowess (and earn some money from the french) is to attack the community and burn the windmill and residence down. He had mustered two groups of Abenaki Indians and a group of hateful Maliseet. The Maliseet have been driven from their land by the English and they are out for revenge on any English they can lay their hands on. The indians are also aided by a small force of French colonial regulars, Troupe de la marine, and a few hardened trappers, Coureurs des bois. Unknown to the indians the forward part of His Majesty’s 44th regiment are camping near the wind mill.  Instead of a few militia the indians are running into redcoats. Light infantry, dragoons and elite grenadiers commanded by a battle hardened colonel.

If the windmill and residence is destroyed the Indians win and if either one is intact at the end of the game the British wins.

The Indian Force.

French-Indian leaders

The first leader is the old bearded trapper Fernand de Bodrillard. We decided to go for an optional rule adding some flavor to the game. One leader on each side have some additional secret motivation that can influence victory conditions. Fernand was randomly chosen. It turned out that the old trappers heart is not in this fight. He knows John Sedgwick and so do many of his men. They have decided to join the raid but Fernand have sworn an oath to the men that they will return safely. The small force of Coureurs des bois (trappers and hunters of the frontiers) must not suffer heavy casualties if the secondary victory condition are to be met. This is a serious drawback for the french since these troops move swiftly and fight hard.

Next is the chief Unguskan and his main force of three indian groups. His own Abenaki Indian troops excel in hand to hand combat but the force is rather brittle and setbacks quickly affects morale and fighting spirit. The Malisset are in a frenzy and the chief knows that he will not be able to hold the revengeful group back.

Finally there is a small force of French marines that will add some proficiency to the force. Their leader lieutenant Foix is a reliable veteran.

The British Force.

John Sedgwick is an old veteran of the frontiers. His unwillingness to join in the wars stems from his opinion about the indians. On the other side of the Appalachians he co worked with the indians and the French trappers. He made many friends and have no lust to fight them. He will however defend his pride and – the large prosperous mill. To help him he can raise some militia, farmers, workers and his own large household. Certainly motivated to defend their homes this force is weak in training and rather easily broken. Luckily they are not alone.

Colonel Stuppon is an old quirk. He had marched his regiment towards the border for weeks. Plagued by rheumatism he settled early last night with his elite grenadiers in a glade near the windmill and sent one lieutenant, McRory, forward with some light troops. He does not trust the bragging Scotsman but pains make an active stance impossible. He drinks some tea and get to sleep not knowing that he will be awakened by intense gunfire the next morning.

McRory was randomly chosen for the optional victory condition affecting the british side. It turns out his men have serious doubts about his ability. McRory brags about his Highlander ancestry and many adventures but it is all lies and the men sense it. To fulfill the condition the Scottish lieutenant must prove his worth. No troop under his command may flee and he must survive the battle. The dragoons and light infantry under his command are disciplined troops and a good match if properly used.


Sedgwicks Wind Mill

Above is a map of initial deployment and opening moves.

The initial deployment rule says that the British must deploy near the buildings. The colonel and his grenadiers, a truly formidable force, is in reserve and will enter the gaming board at random time decided by the dice. This means the defenders are outnumbered at the beginning and must be able to delay the indian advance.  The area around the residence is woody with a stream and some boggy ground. It is likely that the main thrust will come here as the indians are formidable in this kind of terrain where they can move unseen, fire from hidden positions and quickly charge in if they want to. Sedgwick and the British light infantry with McRory is deployed here. Defending the mill where there are open fields are some militia and a civilian work force.


The indians deploy two forces in front of the woods to the right. Another including the chief behind a wheat field and the French are  to the left in an attempt to outflank the mill. The Coureurs des bois will certainly drag their feet or even wander of into the woods. If they can be used without losses they can be handy but any serious opposition will put the optional victory condition at risk.

Sound of gunfire

Norah Sedgwick, the sister of John, have been awake for most of the night nursing her newborn. At 4 o’clock she decides for some fresh air and takes a short stroll down to the stream. Far to the left she sees some figures move across a field a few hundred yards away. As she stands there a much larger group moves out from the tree line. Indians! She quickly turns around and awaken a sleeping sentry. McRory immediately decides to move out into the forest on the other side of the stream. Last night he saw a sturdy stone wall. If he is to confront the indians he thinks this is the right place and the houses will be safe. His light infantry can fire their short carbines and duck back behind the wall. He also understands that this is his chance to prove the men wrong. He must show both determination and bravery to gain their respect.

Light infantry

When the cards are drawn the light force receive the first two actions. McRory moves into a position where his men can use the stone wall for cover. His trusted Mohawk scout Catichuan soon spot a large force of indians moving forward in the woods ahead. McRory understands that he has made a mistake. The indians are near and they heavily outnumber him. His troopers are good shots but the first salvo is very disappointing. A single indian drops. The indians decide not to trade shots and instead run towards the bright red soldiers behind the wall. They charge in, tomahawks flying, and the british cannot stand the onslaught. They retreat down into the stream with the indians on their tails. The dragoons fare no better at the hands of the Abenaki and quickly retreat out of harms way.

Here is an example of game mechanics. McRory and 6 British light infantry face off against 9 Malisset indians in melee. Both teams strike at the same time. McRory starts. He is pretty good with his sabre so he hits 66% of the time needing 3+ on a D6. The roll is a 6 – hit! The indian in front of him can evade or parry with his tomahawk on 4+. Unfortunately for the poor Malisset he rolls 3. Then the light infantry roll one dice par miniature. Thats 6 rolls on a D6 hitting on 4+. 1, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 6. Means that the english hits 3 times. Then the indians can save on 4+. 1, 5, 6 means the indians suffer one extra casualty for two in total. Then it is the indians turn. Since they are bloodthirsty (remember they have a horrible experiences confronting the British) they do not only hit on 3+ any failed dices may be re-rolled. 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 5, 6,6 means 6 hits but we re-roll 3 dice causing a further hit. Thats seven in total. The British save on 4+. Bad luck strikes, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6 is rolled so they take 5 casualties. Since McRory and one infantryman is all that is left and they lost the combat 2 – 5 they have to take a moral check that they fail and they fall back into the stream.

Here McRory meats his maker killed by a swift tomahawk strike and the forward force is destroyed. A heavy blow to the British side. The optional victory condition lost as the Scotsman drop into the water. As this was our first game we did not realize just how strong the indians can be in hand-to-hand combat.

Scotsman down

In the middle of the game board Unguskan himself leads his men towards the windmill through a wheat field. There are militia in front behind a stone wall. He uses his actions to get closer while the enemies fire off some bullets that comes whizzing through the air – inflicting no serious casualties.

Indians advancing

To the left of the indians lieutenant Foix leads his Troupe de la marine causally through the open landscape. Reaching a covering stone wall opposite a hill he starts to exchange fire with the defenders at the mill. Trying to reduce them as the indians move in. The firefight inflicts some casualties on both sides, the outnumbered french taking the worst.

French advancing

Fernand de Bodrillard on the extreme left moves into a small wood with the Coureurs des bois. Trying not to expose themselves to much they wait and see how the fight will unfold.


Back at the residence Sedgewick finds himself in dire strait. In front of him war cries echo in the forest, McRory is nowhere to be seen and soon a large victorious Indian force starts to cross the stream in front of his house. He leads his family out into the courtyard fearing the house might turn into a death trap. Standing like a stonewall with his brother Nathan and three teenage sons behind him. Eloise Sedgwick, the old mother of John will serve as a loader carrying some spare muskets. His wife is sent running to the mill to get some help while the children run for the woods.

Sedgwicks band

Sedgwick group fires at the indians and inflict some casualties but then withdraw behind the house to stay out of melee. Better safe than sorry. Sedgwick’s wife arrives with some reinforcement. Men have taken what they could find. Led by a brave woman and the foreman Gustavus the workers using axes, scythes and picks run out around the corner of the house and attack the indians. The fight is short and brutal as these men are no match for the better armed indians. Sedgwicks group fails their morale check and run off into the woods, their house set on fire behind them. Tears streaming down his face Sedgwick survives the fight with most of his family safe. The question now is – can the mill still  be saved?

Last stand

The colonel have finally got his force of tall grenadiers on the move. Drums beating they start to march down the road. They soon see smoke ahead from the burning house and Stuppon decides to make a stand at the mill.

Relief force

Pressured by the French and Indians the militia have wisely retreated. As the enemy approach the relief arrives in the nick of time. Stuppon forms a red line. The grenadiers fire a devastating salvo and the Indians recoil. The Abenaki make another attempt but their fighting spirit is broken. Lieutenant Foix’s French marines fire a few shots from a hill next to the granary but he knows he has to few men left to make a real difference. Bayonets fixed the grenadiers drive the invading force back from the mill and the day is saved. At a safe distance Fernand see the defeat of his allies and turns around. This was never his fight. The game ends in a  draw. The indians failed their mission but the Malisset got their revenge, destroying McRorys detachment and burning the house down. Fernand held his oath to the men, just one trapper fell and they bury him in the woods, saying some proper words and wondering if they may see Sedgwick again in a peaceful circumstance.
